2. The Royal Exchange Theatre

This is an architectural miracle. A modern theatre built inside the original 19th century world cotton exchange. This is an art gallery, a shopping centre, a cafe restaurant and a theatre all in one. 7. The Museum of Science & Industry

This wonderful and huge museum is on the site of the world’s oldest surviving passenger railway station. With objects and archives that cover Manchester’s development as Britain’s first industrial city, the museum takes visitors through many subject areas such as textiles, power supply, engineering, computing and aviation. It is an exciting museum and a very impressive one, too. A must see whatever your age!

8. Urbis – Exhibition Centre of City Life

This is 3 floors of exhibition space hosting many radical contemporary visiting collections of visual art. You can’t miss the distinctive architecture that is Urbis. The museum will also be the home of the National Football Museum from 2011.

9. BBC Studio Tours

BBC Tours now offers visitors the chance to see behind the scenes at the world famous TV and radio programmes broadcast and produced from BBC Manchester.

BBC Tour guides give an insight into the many programmes originating from BBC Manchester and the level of work it takes to get them from script to screen. They will also answer any questions relating to technical issues and the famous faces who have visited the building. Visitors will also be able to present the weather forecast and even take part in a special recording of a radio drama complete with sound effects!

Manchester Art Gallery is one of the region’s most popular cultural destinations, attracting over 400,000 visits each year. in 2002, a £35million refurbishment and expansion programme transformed the venue into a world-class gallery for Manchester. Our collection covers over six centuries up to the present day, but we are especially renowned for our 19th century British paintings. Particular visitor favourites include our collection of major Pre-Raphaelite works and the impressionistic paintings of Adolphe Valette.
